About us

The leading coalition of organisations and individuals from Central & Eastern Europe and Central Asia, working for gender equality and gender justice.

WE ARE A GATEWAY AND A MEGAPHONE

Through KARAT, the voices of our member organisations are amplified and channelled together in order to be heard and listened to on a European level and beyond. As the only network of this kind in the region, the important and difficult efforts of our members are internationally recognised when often undervalued in their own countries.

WE PROVIDE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES FOR SOLIDARITY AND MUTUAL SUPPORT

Our Women’s Human Rights Programme strives to ensure that international states commitments to women’s rights are observed.

Our Gender and Development Programme encourages new EU donor countries to make development policies and programs gender-sensitive and gender-responsive.

Our Social and Economic Justice Programme aims to improve the socio-economic situation of women in the Central & Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

HERSTORY IN SHORT

With the United Nations 4th World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995, a crucial need was identified for cooperation of women from the Region to advocate jointly for our specific needs. This resulted in the establishment of KARAT Coalition in 1997.

Our activities are a reaction to key processes impacting lives of women in the Region, including UN processes, EU enlargement and development issues.

KARAT Coalition holds Consultative Status with ECOSOC (United Nations Economic and Social Council).
