Current projects -> Through their eyes... -> Data gathering tours -> Blog “Balkan women” by Katarina Medlova from Slovakia

In her blog Katarina put emphasis on the use of photography in order to create convincing portraits of women and draw attention and real-life of Macedonian women. Those multicolour photographs taken from different perspective and angels serve as the background for stories of women described in the blog.

Katarina: All the stories I have collected were really moving. We have seen the home-based workers in their own homes, who described their difficult situation regarding their jobs and earning the living. The women I talked to, similarly to many other women in Balkans are in a position where because of their age, they cannot be on [old age] pension, but in a same way are "too old" for the employers. They encounter many stereotypes regarding their place in the society – home based work is seen as something „natural” for the women and is not considered to be a proper work. Also, some women claim, that „women business” or „women´s associations” are seen with suspicions and funny. I have been also very interested in bad working conditions in the textile factories.
