Current projects -> Through their eyes... -> Data gathering tours -> Movie “Her Story” by Paulina Jędrzejewska
Paulina spent two weeks in Orsantia which is the town on the border between Abkhazia and Georgia. She has been invited by old woman named Marika to spend time with her and her family. Paulina had an opportunity to participate in their everyday life to observe women’s role in Georgian society. Paulina’s movie focuses mainly on economic situation of women. In the background of all stories the impact of conflict in Abkhazia on the society, the patriarchal nature of society, and still not completed transition to democracy can be seen.
The author has created a quality document which can serve as educational tool as it is a source of solid information free of stereotypes. The movie shows women of different age and with various life stories.
The movie will be soon available here
Paulina: I have to admit I was shocked with the standard of living and patriarchal culture which women in Georgia are facing and fighting with. A married woman in Georgia, especially at the village might not be allowed to work. Her life decisions are being made by her husband. If the husband is understanding and nice he might be willing to ask his wife for opinion. But if he’s not, the woman will have to comply with his decision. However, also because of the lack of social care and health system people are left alone with their problems. Very little, not efficient government support is being given. Huge unemployment and exhausted nation after many civil wars are created an atmosphere of depression and frustration. But of course people fall in love in Georgia and many of them are truly happy. I have met many great and brave women, caring and loving husbands and cheerful children.
